International Cultural Center, Oscar Niemeyer
The only example of Oscar Niemeyer's work in Spain -and one of only a few in Europe- has recently been unveiled. Built in the Brazilian architect's trademark style, the project consists of a large square and 4 buildings: an auditorium seating close to 1000 people; an observation tower with views over the estuary; a dome containing a 2500m2 exhibition space; and a multi-purpose building that will house a film centre, rehearsal spaces and meeting rooms.
The complex also has a large open square in which a continuous programme of leisure and cultural activities will take place. The Niemeyer Cultural Centre forms part of an ambitious urban restructuring and economic regeneration plan that will totally transform the bank of the estuary, currently occupied by industrial land.
